How it works

What it measures

The risk of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) via 8 yes/no questions — the STOP-BANG acronym.

Scoring

Number of 'yes' answers → 0 to 8. More 'yes', higher OSA probability.

The items

S
Snoring (loud)
T
Tiredness / daytime sleepiness
O
Observed apnoeas
P
Pressure (hypertension)
B
BMI > 35 kg/m²
A
Age > 50
N
Neck > 40 cm F / > 43 cm M
G
Gender male

Interpretation

0-2 Low risk

Low OSA probability. No further screening unless symptomatic.

3-4 Intermediate

Consider sleep study according to symptoms and comorbidity.

5-8 High risk

High probability of moderate-severe OSA. Refer for a sleep study.

Screening, not diagnostic. OSA diagnosis requires a sleep study (respiratory polygraphy/polysomnography).
