What it measures
The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from creatinine, to classify kidney function by the KDIGO categories.
Scoring
CKD-EPI 2021 equation (race-free): creatinine, age and sex → eGFR in mL/min/1.73 m². Lower eGFR, worse kidney function.
The items
Interpretation
Normal function. Only CKD if there is kidney damage (e.g. albuminuria) sustained >3 months.
Like G1: without damage markers it is not CKD. Manage risk factors.
Confirmed CKD. Assess cause, albuminuria and CV risk; adjust renally-cleared drugs.
Close follow-up; consider nephrology referral by albuminuria and progression.
Refer to nephrology; prepare renal replacement if it progresses.
Kidney failure; dialysis or transplant depending on the clinical picture.
Diagnosing CKD needs two measurements >3 months apart. Combine with albuminuria (A1-A3) to stage risk (KDIGO map).
